Many creative organizations are built through passion, volunteer effort, and a deep commitment to purpose.
As they grow, the structure behind the work does not always grow with them. Responsibilities become unclear. Decisions depend on a few people. Knowledge is carried individually instead of protected collectively.
CODA exists to help organizations strengthen the systems beneath their work—so leadership becomes clearer, responsibility is shared more effectively, and continuity does not depend on heroic effort.
Phil Mahar
Founder of CODA Consulting
Phil Mahar founded CODA at the intersection of two leadership paths: more than a decade of leadership within the arts, and a career leading teams and businesses in retail and luxury environments.
In retail leadership, Phil has built teams, supported new business openings, developed leaders, and strengthened performance, accountability, and execution in complex, people-centred environments.
With Forte - Toronto Gay Men’s Chorus, including serving as President, Phil helped guide organizational repositioning, post-pandemic recovery, membership growth, fundraising development, financial stability, and stronger support systems for a growing creative organization.
CODA brings these experiences together: the operational discipline of business leadership and the lived understanding of creative, community-based work.
Structure is not the purpose of the organization. It is the support beneath it.
Systems that hold create dependable pathways for decisions. Clear decision pathways make responsibility visible. Clear responsibility helps people lead, contribute, and let go with confidence.
When each layer supports the one above it, the organization is better able to protect its people, serve its community, and carry its purpose forward.
CODA helps creative organizations move from unclear responsibility and strained systems toward greater clarity, confidence, and continuity.
